Statute overview

About this statute

Foreigners who apply for provisional residence are exempt from paying fines and other fees, except those already provided for in Article 4 of the Law. If the foreigner’s information is false, provisional or permanent residence must be declared null. A foreigner who entered Brazil by 1 February 2009 and is still in irregular migration status may request provisional residence. If provisional registration is granted, the Ministry of Justice must issue a foreigner identity card valid for 2 years.
