Statute overview

About this statute

When the Agreement enters into force, a Commission in Jerusalem will be formed. The Spanish Government may also appoint an additional representative if it considers that useful. Questions or difficulties about interpreting or carrying out the agreed matters are referred to the Commission in Annex article 1; if it cannot resolve them, the Holy See and Spain settle them by mutual agreement. The agreement exists in two equally authentic copies, one in Spanish and one in Italian. The Agreement enters into force once the Contracting Parties notify each other that their respective internal procedures for international treaties have been completed. Spain recognizes the full and exclusive competence of the Holy See and the Custody of the Holy Land to exercise their jurisdiction independently for conserving and administering the Holy Places and related institutions in the Near East.
