Statute overview

About this statute

Spaniards may acquire French nationality, and French nationals may acquire Spanish nationality, if they meet the requirements set by the law of the country whose nationality they seek. People covered by the Convention may obtain and renew their passports or identity documents under each party’s rules. Certain Spaniards and French nationals who changed nationality before this Convention took effect may choose to use it, and its provisions apply to them from the date they do so. Ambos Gobiernos deben consultarse periódicamente para aplicar este Convenio y, de común acuerdo, estudiar posibles modificaciones o adiciones. The Convention starts on the first day of the month after the Parties notify each other that the necessary legal procedures are completed. It lasts indefinitely. Any Party may denounce it, but the denunciation must be sent in writing and through diplomatic channels, and takes effect 12 months after receipt.
