Jersey Law 3/1998 ADVOCATES AND SOLICITORS (AMENDMENT) (JERSEY) LAW 1998 ____________ A LAW to amend the Advocates and Solicitors (Jersey) Law 1997, sanctioned by Order of Her Majesty in Council of the 17th day of DECEMBER 1997 ____________ (Registered on the 16th day of January 1998) ____________ STATES OF JERSEY ____________ The 7th day of October 1997 ____________ T HE STATES, subject to the sanction of Her Most Excellent Majesty in Council, have adopted the following Law – ARTICLE 1 In Article 1 of the Advocates and Solicitors (Jersey) Law 1997 1 (hereinafter referred to as “the principal Law”), after paragraph (2) there shall be inserted the following paragraph – “(2A) In this Law – (a) a reference to the examinations and assessments included in any course validated by the Bar Council for call to the Bar of England and Wales by any one of the Inns of Court in England includes the examinations formerly set by the Council of Legal Education for that purpose; (b) a reference to the examinations and assessments included in any course validated by the Law Society of England and Wales for admission as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales includes the examinations formerly set by the Law Society of England and Wales for that purpose.”. ARTICLE 2 In Article 3 of the principal Law – (a) in sub-paragraph (a) of paragraph (2), for clause ( i ) there shall be substituted the following clause – “( i ) either the examinations and assessments included in any course validated by the Bar Council for call to the Bar of England and Wales by any one of the Inns of Court in England or the examinations and assessments included in any course validated by the Law Society of England and Wales for admission as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales or such other examinations and assessments as may be specified, and”; (b) in sub-paragraph (b) of paragraph (3), for clause ( i ) there shall be substituted the following clause – “( i ) that when so admitted he had passed either the examinations and assessments included in any course validated by the Bar Council for call to the Bar of England and Wales by any one of the Inns of Court in England or the examinations and assessments included in any course validated by the Law Society of England and Wales for admission as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales or such other examinations and assessments as may be specified; or”. ARTICLE 3 In Article 4 of the principal Law, in sub-paragraph (a) of paragraph (2), for clause (ii) there shall be substituted the following clause – “(ii) has passed the examinations and assessments included in any course validated by the Common Professional Examination Board in England and Wales or such other examinations and assessments as may be specified;”. ARTICLE 4 In the Third Schedule to the principal Law, in clause (a) of sub-paragraph (1) of paragraph 2, for sub-clause ( i ) there shall be substituted the following sub-clause – “( i ) either the examinations and assessments included in any course validated by the Bar Council for call to the Bar of England and Wales by any one of the Inns of Court in England or the examinations and assessments included in any course validated by the Law Society of England and Wales for admission as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales, and”; ARTICLE 5 This Law may be cited as the Advocates and Solicitors (Amendment) (Jersey) Law 1998.
