This provision gives the Act its short title: the Chief’s Act. This section defines key terms used in the Act, including Chief, Chief’s Council, Chief’s Messenger, District Commissioner, Group Village Headman, Section, Sub-Chief, village, and Village Headman. This section sets which offices of Paramount Chief, Senior Chief, Chief, and Sub-Chief exist and which areas they cover, and limits their jurisdiction in cities, municipalities, and townships unless approved in writing by the proper Council. The President may appoint a Paramount Chief, Senior Chief, or Chief in writing if he recognizes the person as entitled to the office.
