Statute overview

About this statute

Each Party must prohibit, prevent, and not carry out nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions in places under its jurisdiction or control. Parties may propose treaty amendments, and depositary governments must circulate them; if requested by one-third or more of the Parties, they must convene a conference. An amendment needs majority approval and ratification to enter into force for all Parties. States may sign or later accede to the Treaty, and depositary governments must notify parties about signatures, deposits, entry into force, and related requests. The depositary governments must register the treaty in line with Article 102 of the UN Charter. The treaty lasts indefinitely, and each party may withdraw if extraordinary events threaten its supreme interests, provided it gives three months’ notice to the other parties.
