This regulation applies to insurers, whether public or private, and treats reinsurers as insurers for its purposes. An insurer must invest its assets in a way that matches the nature and duration of its assets and liabilities. An insurer must hold its investment in the insurer’s own name at all times. An insurer may mortgage its assets only with prior approval from the Supervisory Authority, and only for temporary loans or bank overdrafts. The mortgage cannot exceed 10% of total assets.
