The legislature as a creature of the Constitution is there to legislate in the best interest of the citizens of Seychelles and ensure accountability by the Government for the interest of the citizens of Seychelles. Accordingly, the office of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker should not only be discharged with fairness and impartiality but should also be seen to do so. This amendment seeks to remove the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker from the political hold of his or her political party. That amendment will also apply to the office of the Leader of the Opposition, as it will provide for the eventuality that the Leader of the Opposition becomes the Speaker or Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, as provided for in article 84 (3) (b) of the Constitution.
