Singapore Academy of Law Act 1988 2020 REVISED EDITION This revised edition incorporates all amendments up to and including 1 December 2021 and comes into operation on 31 December 2021 An Act to establish the Singapore Academy of Law and for matters connected therewith. [1 November 1988] PRELIMINARY Short title 1. This Act is the Singapore Academy of Law Act 1988. Interpretation 2. In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires — “Academy” means the Singapore Academy of Law established under section 3; “advocate and solicitor” means an advocate and solicitor of the Supreme Court but excludes any person admitted ad hoc under section 15 of the Legal Profession Act 1966; “Constitution” means the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore; “foreign lawyer” has the meaning given by the Legal Profession Act 1966; “Institute” means the Singapore Institute of Legal Education established under section 3 of the Legal Profession Act 1966; “Law Society” means the Law Society of Singapore established under section 37 of the Legal Profession Act 1966; “lawyer (NP)” has the meaning given by section 2(1) of the Legal Profession Act 1966; [Act 37 of 2023 wef 17/04/2025] [Deleted by Act 33 of 2021 wef 14/01/2022] “member” includes a Fellow, honorary member, ordinary member and associate member of the Academy; “PD Officer” means — (a) the Chief Public Defender, a Deputy Chief Public Defender or an Assistant Chief Public Defender appointed under section 3 of the Public Defenders Act 2022; or (b) a public defender appointed under section 3(6) of the Public Defenders Act 2022 who is a public officer and a qualified person; [Act 23 of 2022 wef 16/01/2023] “president” means the president of the Academy; “qualified person” has the meaning given by section 2 of the Legal Profession Act 1966; “Senate” means the Senate of the Academy established under section 5; “Supreme Court Judge” includes a Judicial Commissioner; “vice-president” means a vice‑president of the Academy.
