ACT To amend the University of Durban- Westville Act, 1983, so as to substitute a definition; to further regulate the constitution of the council; and to provide for matters connected therewith. (Ajiikaans text signed by the President.) (Assented to 28 August 1997. ) B E IT ENACTED by the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa, as follows:— Amendment of section 1 of Act 81 of 1983

1. Section 1 of the University of Durban-Westville Act, 1983 (hereinafter referred to as the principal Act). is hereby amended by the substitution for the definition of 5 “Minister” of the following definition: “ ‘Minister’ means the Minister of [Internal Affairs] Education;”. Amendment of section 8 of Act 81 of 1983, as amended by section 1 of Act 51 of 1993 and section 1 of Act 82 of 1996

2. Section 8 of the principal Act is hereby amended by the substitution for paragraph 10 (f) of subs~ction (1) of the following paragraph: (J) not more than two persons nominated by the Durban Metropolitan Council after consultation with all the local councils within the Durban Metropolitan Council;”. Transitional provision

3. The members of the council of the University of Durban-Westville who served in the council by virtue of section 8(1)&) of the University of Durban-Westville Act, 1983 (Act No. 81 of 1983), before the date of commencement of this Act. shall cease to be members of the council from the said date. Short title and commencement

4. This Act shall be called the University of Durban-Westville (Private) Amendment Act. 1997, and shall come into operation on a date determined by the President by proclamation in the Gazette. 15 20
