ACT To amend the Council of ~aditiond Leaders Act, 1997, so as to change the name of the Council of Traditional Leaders to the National House of Tradition Leaders; and to provide for matters connected therewith. (English text signed by the President.) (Assented to 20 October 1998.) B E IT ENACTED by the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa, as follows:— Amendment of section 1 of Act 10 of 1997

1. Section 1 of the Council of Traditional Leaders Act, 1997 (hereafter referred to as the principal Act), is hereby arnended— 5 (a) by the deletion of the definition of “Council”; (b) by the insertion of the following definition after the definition of “House”: “ ‘National House’ means the National House of Traditional Leaders referred to in section 2(1) ;“; and (c) by the substitution for the definition of “House” of the following definition: 10 “ ‘Provincial House’ means any House of Traditional Leaders which is established by provincial legislation under section 212(2)(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 (Act No. 108 of 1996), or which was established by provincial legislation as contem- plated in section 239 of the said Constitution, as the case may be;”. 15 Substitution of section 2 of Act 10 of 1997

2. 3. The following section is hereby substituted for section 16 of the principal Act: “Short title

16. This Act shall be called the [Council] National House of Traditional Leaders Act, 1997.”. 5 Substitution of words in Act 10 of 1997

4. The principal Act is hereby amended— (a) by the substitution for the word “Council”, wherever it occurs, except in section 15, of the words “National House”; and (b) by the substitution for the words “House” and “Houses”, wherever they 10 occur, except in section 1, of tie words “Provincial House” and “Provincial Houses”, respectively. 5. The following long title is hereby substituted for the long title of the principal Act: “To provide for the establishment of a council to be known as the National House of Traditional Leaders; to provide for the objec~ and functions of the National House of Traditional Leaders; and to provide for matters related thereto.”. Construction of references to Council of ~aditional Leaders

6. A reference in any law or document to the Council of Traditional Leaders shall be construed as a reference to the National House of Traditional Leaders. 15 20 Short title
