The Tanganyika Law Society (Annual Subscription) Regulations, 2017

1. These Regulations may be cited as the Tanganyika Law Society (Annual Subscription) Regulations, 2017. Interpretation

2. In these Regulations, unless the context otherwise Cap. 307 requires- “Act” means the Tanganyika Law Society Act; “Advocate” shall have the meaning as defined under the Advocates act; “Senior Advocate” shall mean an Advocate who has been in legal practice for a period of twenty four months and above counted from the date of that advocate’s admission to the Roll of Advocates in Tanzania Mainland; “Junior Advocate” shall mean an Advocate who has been in legal practice for a period of twenty four months and bellow counted from the date of admission; “Foreign Advocate” shall mean an Legal Practitioner of whatever name who is having in force a practicing Certificate of a foreign country and who has sought and obtained permission from the Chief Justice of Tanzania to practice in Tanzania under the Advocates Act; “Council” shall have the meaning as defined under the Act; 1 Cap. 341 Tanganyika Law Society (Annual Subscription) G.N. Cap. 341 Types of membership “Practising Member” shall mean an advocate who is required to have a practicing certificate in force in order to practice law in Tanzania Mainland; “Non Practising Member” shall mean any public practitioner or any other person, other than an Honorary Member, who has applied for membership of the Tanganyika Law Society; “Honorary member” Any member elected as such by the Council under section 9 of the Act; “Fund” shall mean the Fund of the Tanganyika Law Society as provided for under the Act and the Advocates Act; and “Society” shall mean the Tanganyika Law Society established under section 3 of the Act. PART II MEMBERSHIP

3.-(1) The Tanganyika Law Society shall, for the purpose of these Regulations, have the following categories: Practising members; (a) (b) Non Practising members; and (c) Honorary members. (2) Any member of the Society, other than an honorary member, shall have an obligation to pay the annual subscription and other fees or contributions the amount of which is prescribed in these regulations. (3) The annual members’ subscription shall be paid to the Fund as follows: (a) twelve a Junior Advocate shall pay to the fund the amount of annual subscription amounting to two thousand Tanzanian hundred and shillings; a Senior Advocate shall pay to the fund the amount of annual subscription amounting to three hundred and sixty two thousand Tanzanian shillings; a Foreign Advocate shall pay to the fund the amount of annual subscription amounting to nine hundred and sixty dollars; and (b) (c) 2 Tanganyika Law Society (Annual Subscription) G.N. No. 11 (contd.) (d) a non practising member shall pay to the fund the amount of annual subscription amounting to one hundred and twenty thousand Tanzanian shillings. (4) Every Practising Member shall pay to the fund the amount of fifty thousand Tanzanian shillings as contribution to the Legal Aid and Advocacy Centre (LAAC) Project provided that this contribution shall end after the Council has formerly declared the completion of the LAAC Project, Provided that the said amount of annual subscription is exclusive of the Annual subscription payable to the fund of the East Africa Law Society and the Deceased Advocates Trust Fund (DATF).
