In these Regulations, unless the context otherwise requires- “Act” means the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute Act; “Board of Directors” means the Board of Directors established pursuant to Cap. 226 Caps. 287 and 288 section 6 of the Act; “animal” has the meaning ascribed to it under the Wildlife Conservation Act; “collaborative project” means a project that involves TAWIRI and a research institution from proposal development and execution of the research project as per the Memorandum of Understanding; “Commission for Science and Technology” has the meaning ascribed to it under the Commission for Science and Technology Act; “data” means numbers, letters and symbols collected through various means and which may be processed to produce information; “foreign researcher” means foreign scientist who holds a masters degree and above registered by COSTECH and TAWIRI to undertake wildlife research in the country; “Institute” has the meaning ascribed to it under the Act; “Joint Management Research Committee” hereinafter also referred to in its acronym as “JMRC”; “local researcher” means local scientist who holds a masters and above registered by COSTECH and TAWIRI to undertake wildlife research in the country; “local government authorities” has the meaning ascribed to it under the Local Government (District) Authorities Act and Local Government (Urban) Authorities Act; “management authorities” means authorities mandated to manage Game Reserves, Game Controlled Areas, National Parks or Ngorongoro Conservation Area or Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs), Private Areas or Game Ranches and Open Areas or as the case may be Forest Reserves being Central, Local Government or 4 Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (Conduct Of Wildlife Research) GN. NO. 628(Contd) Cap. 59 Community Forest Reserve; “ National Institute for Medical Research” has the meaning ascribed to it under the National Institute for Medical Research Act; “plant” means a living thing that grows on earth, in water, or on other plants, usually has a stem, leaves, roots, and flowers, and produces seeds; “Protected Areas” means an area of land or sea specifically protected for maintenance of biological diversity, natural or associated cultural resources and managed through legal or other effective means; “Principal Investigator, means a leader of a project also known in its acronym “PI”; “prospective researchers” means an anticipated researcher who has submitted his application to the Institute and COSTECH and waiting for clearance; “researcher” has the meaning ascribed to it under the Act; “research associate” means a person who holds a good academic qualification with at least a bachelor degree joining the Institute to strengthen research capacity mostly on demand driven research; “specimen” means any animal or plant, whether dead or alive and any readily recognisable part or derivate thereof, including tissues and fluids; “study areas” means an area such as Game Reserves, Game Controlled Areas, Forest Reserves, National Parks or Ngorongoro Conservation Area or Wildlife Management Areas, Private Areas or Game Ranches and Open areas or forest reserves being Central, Local Government or Community Forest Reserve; Cap. 319 “Veterinary Council of Tanzania” has the meaning ascribed to it under the Veterinary Act; Cap. 283 “wildlife” has the meaning ascribed to it under the Wildlife Conservation Act; “Wildlife Management Areas” means an area declared by the Minister under section 31 of the Wildlife Conservation Act. (1) A research project proposal shall be scrutinized for

(1) Upon obtaining the research permit under regulation 4, the

(7) The Principal Investigator may identify the research assistant, in case he fails to identify a Tanzanian research assistant, the Institute may assist to do so. (8) A Tanzanian research assistant may be replaced by new research assistant through formal application to the Institute by the Principal Investigator.
