If the property is not claimed within two years after its removal from safekeeping the state bank may proceed to sell so much thereof as is necessary to pay the charge which remains unpaid and the expense incurred in making the sale in the manner provided for in subsections 3 and 4 of section 524.812. The proceeds of any sale made pursuant to this section, after payment of any amounts with respect to which the state bank has a lien, any property which was not offered for sale and property which, although offered for sale, was not sold, shall be retained by the state bank until such time as the property is presumed abandoned according to the provisions of section 556.2, and shall thereafter be handled in accordance with the provisions of that chapter.
