Statute overview

About this statute

This section gives the Act its short title: the Hire-Purchase Act. This Act does not apply to agreements where the Government is the seller, or to agreements made before the Act started, subject to section 29(2). This section defines key terms used in the Act and explains how certain references and payments should be read. Part II does not apply to agreements where the purchase price is over 3,000 kwacha, but sections 5, 23, and 24 still apply to every agreement. Every agreement must be written down, signed by or for all parties, and state the cash price.
